Healthy Living Guide - Free Download

By Linda Eve Diamond

Listening through the barrage of health and nutrition news and marketing is quite a challenge these days. As you may know, my husband,
Jeff Novick, offers a common sense approach to sorting through health claims and making healthful choices.

Some of Jeff's helpful guidelines are included in this new
"Healthy Living" guide, which was developed by Craig McDougall, MD, in conjunction with Northwest Kaiser Permanente. Craig McDougall's medical speciality clinic uses a plant-based diet to prevent and reverse most common diseases. They invite free downloads and sharing of the pdf below, so feel free to download and share!

Time to Redefine "Like a Girl"!

By Linda Eve Diamond

Take a few moments to watch this outstanding video that asks: When did "like a girl" become an insult? And how does hearing that phrase as an insult affect a young girl's confidence?

This video was di
rected by award-winning documentary filmmaker Lauren Greenfield for Always, a company that's decided to take on this confidence-bursting phrase and redefine it. Always invites tweets, photos and videos that show what "like a girl" really means using the hashtag #LikeAGirl. Let's all join them in redefining this phrase to reflect a more positive, truthful, empowering reality!

"I Know What You Are Thinking..." a Poem by Sheila Danzig

Here's a special poem by my wonderful Aunt (in law) Sheila! She sent me this poem today with a message that she has been enjoying her trike so much she felt inspired to write a poem about it. I love this poem and it seems like a perfectly beautiful way to end National Poetry Month. Enjoy... Happy

I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING

By Sheila Danzig

I know what you see when you look at me
I have seen Grandmas on 3 wheel bikes
With big baskets in the back
It is a site
Add to that my UV Shirt just like the gardeners are wearing
A reflective vest
An orange flag
A little orange bell
A rear view mirror
A blue tooth headset with a boom microphone
And a helmet
I know what you see....

I know what you are thinking when you look at me
I see your face
I see parents poking their kids and pointing
I see your expression as I approach you and suddenly
you realize you know that person on the 3 wheeler.
I see you laugh at my picture
I know what you are thinking...

What you don't know is how I feel
I don't feel like a Grandma on a trike
I feel like a 10 year old on a dirt bike
I feel like I felt at 12 on my sisters hand-me-down English Racer
I feel like the wind
I feel like the sky
I feel alive
I feel

Poems with a Listening Heart

April 24 is Poem in Your Pocket Day, a day established by the Academy of American Poets to encourage people to carry and share poems throughout the day.

This year, I'd like to share more than a pocket poem, but a pocket full of poems, some poems from my collection, "
The Beauty of Listening," and some other favorite poems I've found along the way that have listening themes. Poem in Your Pocket day seems like a good time to revisit and share.

Listening themes range from intuition to creative inspiration to interpersonal listening. I hope you'll enjoy them and also enjoy sharing a poem—any poem—on this special day for sharing poetry!

A Pocket Full of Poems...

  • Gift (a poem on silence) by the Leonard Cohen (an early video reading)
  • How to Be Alone by Tanya Davis (video)
  • An Idea by Wislawa Szymborska (audio)

As poetry is everywhere—and not just during National Poetry Month—here's another little poem about "found" poetry:
Poetry on the Shelf (from "The Beauty of Listening"). (Also click here for an image of "found poetry" using listening books!)

And now, for a silent video poem that honors compassionate listeners. Click below to see "White."

"The Beginning" - A New Poem from "The Beauty of Listening"

Here we are at midnight on the little bridge between Listening Awareness Month and National Poetry Month. How perfect that these two worlds are connected by such a little bridge that they have no real separation. After all, listening is integral to the creation and appreciation of poetry, and the language of poetry teaches us to listen to old concepts in new ways.

Join me for poetry posts on this blog and (and on my
Facebook and Twitter pages) throughout National Poetry Month. This year, I'll include some poems from my listening-themed poetry collection: "The Beauty of Listening."

I'll start by sharing the opening poem from "
The Beauty of Listening." After all, it only makes sense to begin at "The Beginning"...

THE BEGINNING

By Linda Eve Diamond

In the beginning… you arrived—opening, unfolding with a cry.
Though beginnings are hard to define by place or time.

You might say the beginning was the first day
you responded in some way to sound

or the first time someone listened
intently to your heartbeat.

In that beginning you were wrapped
in your mother’s voice, love, turmoil, music…

Somewhere in your beginning you were tiny
as a grain of rice—your whole being etched within...

Before then, you began as a joining of two
whose histories run through you…

Even when you were born,
you were no blank slate.

You came to the table as you were.
As you are, you come to tables

with old ideas for new beginnings
hard facts crossed with wired beliefs.

So much depends upon perspective
as truths pivot and turn, live and die.

Forever learning from others, for better or worse,
learning from within, on a never-ending curve…

a mind shaped by time and place,
worlds of local words and metaphors…

the words that wrapped around you as you grew
or burrowed deep within your sense of self.

.................

Within each moment, present past future breathe
each new beginning, a rush of newness echoes dreams.

It’s all there inside—words, music, metaphors…
the earliest and last times someone touched you when you cried.

The early days, when you knew nothing and felt everything—
the days, after all you’ve learned, that still feel that way…

all shaping who you are and what you hear
as you perceive and relate your own, unique meaning.

.................

We spiral through the vast, ever-changing world
on the only solid ground we know—for the moment…

holding balance while reaching for new ideas…
quieting our minds to feel and empathize…

all part of the challenge of nature and change,
old ideas and new beginnings…

the wonder and beauty
of listening.

A New Way to Hear the Music of Trees

By Linda Eve Diamond

And now for a totally unique sound experience…

Imagine a slice of wood placed on a record player—see a record made of wood with rings that look like roughly drawn grooves. Now imagine a special record player that would translate the tree's rings into music.

Bartholom
äus Traubeck, a multi-media artist from Germany, imagined such a player—and created it. He calls it, "The Years."

The rings of every tree tell about not only the age, but also the strength and rate of growth during each year. Some basic musical programming is set, allowing details from the wood to be transferred into data and translated into piano music. Then each tree, with its own unique data, creates its own song. If you watch the video below, you'll see where the knots create particularly interesting variations within the music.

Click below to listen to the music of a tree played through "The Years"…

Click the play button or individual titles below to hear variations from seven different trees...

Click
here to see the inventor's Website. For those wondering how this invention works, this post by the Creative Applications Network lists some of the major technical components as "arduino, ps eye, stepper motor for moving the tonerm, vvvv and ableton live, all connected via midiyoke and/or serial." I don't know about you, but to me that might as well say, "Αυτό έγινε από καθαρή μαγεία."

However it's done, it just seems magical to me that someone has found a new way for us to experience the stories and the music of the trees. Happy

The Sound Experience of Silence

By Linda Eve Diamond

John Cage was an innovative composer and musician—a master of sound, silence and the actual sounds of silence—whose compositions raised many questions, including:

  • What is art?
  • What is music?
  • What is silence?
  • Is all sound music?
  • Are all of the ambient sounds of our lives composing a fantastically unique musical score?

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE

John Cage was fascinated by the sounds of silence, as no one ever experiences true, total silence. Even in an anechoic chamber (designed to block all sound), he was fascinated to hear two sounds and to learn that the low sound was his blood circulating and the high sound was his nervous system.

While our experiences of silence (as we know it) provide the landscape for great inner explorations, we also know that total silence is unattainable. Life, itself, cannot exist without the music of sound. So, while many of us use silence for inner listening and tune out external sounds, Cage asks us to also embrace the experience of tuning
in and listening to those sounds, appreciating the so-called noises of our surroundings as music.

4'33"

John Cage's most famous piece was 4'33", which presented silence as a musical score, taking into account the experience of bringing background sounds to the forefront. These are the actual, external sounds of silence. Even in a concert hall, there are coughs and taps and background hums, but that ambient noise is part of a concert that is unique every time.

Here is 4'33" performed on concert piano:

And here is 4'33" performed by a full orchestra:

I particularly like 4'33" because I can play it on the violin—or any other instrument I've ever wished that I could play. ;D

THE MUSIC OF SOUNDS

Now that you've spent some time listening to sounds of silence, here's John Cage playing a concerto of sounds he called "Water Walk." The instruments featured in this performance include a water pitcher, an iron pipe, ice cubes, a vase of roses, a mechanical fish, radios, a rubber duck and a grand piano.

The host of "I've Got a Secret" dispensed with the show's format to allow Cage time to play the full piece. He also told Cage that people may laugh, to which Cage replied: "I consider laugher preferable to tears." In fact, laughter seemed to be one of Cage's favorite sounds, so I imagine he enjoyed the incorporation of laughter into his music.

Enjoy! Happy
